The urn material is designed to biodegrade naturally after burial and eventually return to nature without leaving persistent material behind.
Are the urns suitable for natural burial?
Yes. Natural burial was one of the key considerations behind the development of UrnBT urns.
Our urns are designed to biodegrade naturally and completely after burial without leaving persistent residues behind. This makes them particularly well suited to environmentally conscious and natural burial practices.
Are the urns suitable for forest cemeteries?
Yes. In fact, UrnBT urns were originally developed with forest and natural burial in mind in Finland.
Their biodegradable construction makes them particularly well suited to forest cemeteries and other natural burial environments, while they can also be used for conventional cemetery burials.

[ADD EXACT APPLICABLE STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATION NUMBERS HERE]
We can provide relevant technical documentation and material information to funeral professionals when required.
What certifications does the material have?
The biomaterial used to manufacture UrnBT urns holds recognised certifications relating to its biodegradability and compostability, including:
- EN 13432 / OK COMPOST (TÜV Austria)
- BPI Certified Compostable (North America)
- ABA Compostable (Australia)
- Biobased Content Certifications: DIN CERTCO (EU), JBPA (Japan), USDA (USA)
The biomaterial is reinforced with natural agricultural straw. Straw is an annually renewable raw material and biodegrades naturally.

Are UrnBT urns fully biodegradable?
Yes. Biodegradability was a fundamental requirement when we developed UrnBT urns.
Under suitable burial conditions, the urn is designed to biodegrade completely. The decomposition process typically takes approximately 2–4 years, although the actual time depends on environmental conditions such as soil, moisture, temperature and biological activity.
Do UrnBT urns contain conventional plastic?
No. UrnBT urns are not made from conventional fossil-based plastic.
One of our fundamental design objectives was to create an urn that biodegrades completely after burial and does not leave persistent plastic waste in the environment.
The urn consists of a biodegradable biomaterial reinforced with natural agricultural straw.
What happens to the urn after it is buried?
Once the urn is buried, moisture, soil and naturally occurring microorganisms begin interacting with the biodegradable material.
These conditions initiate and support the biodegradation process. Over time, microorganisms break down the material and the structure of the urn gradually decomposes.
Under suitable burial conditions, the urn is designed to biodegrade completely within approximately 2–4 years. The exact rate depends on the surrounding soil and environmental conditions.
Can UrnBT urns be used with ash capsules in Germany and Austria?
Yes. UrnBT urns are designed to accommodate the most commonly used ash capsules (*Aschekapseln*) in Germany and Austria.
The ash capsule is placed inside the UrnBT urn, allowing the decorative biodegradable urn to be used within the established funeral practices where an ash capsule is required.
If you are unsure whether the ash capsule used by your crematorium or supplier will fit, please contact us with its dimensions and we will confirm compatibility before you order.

Why Choose UrnBT?
What makes UrnBT different from conventional urns?
UrnBT combines natural materials, modern manufacturing and Nordic design in an urn created specifically with biodegradability in mind.
Instead of conventional materials, the body of an UrnBT urn is made from a biodegradable biomaterial reinforced with natural agricultural straw. The result is an urn that is lightweight and durable during handling, yet designed to biodegrade naturally after burial.
Our urns are manufactured in Finland and finished individually in Loppi. The collection ranges from the natural appearance of the raw material to painted, ribbon-decorated and engraved designs.
For funeral homes, UrnBT offers another important advantage: the collection can be introduced without replacing your existing suppliers or committing to large quantities. Even a single urn can be ordered.
1. Why wheat straw?
We wanted to use a material that connects the urn naturally with the environment it eventually returns to.
Wheat straw is a renewable agricultural material. Unlike materials that require decades for their raw material to grow, new straw is produced with every annual harvest.
It also gives the material its distinctive natural character. The visible fibres and subtle variations mean that the material itself becomes part of the design rather than something that needs to be hidden.
Using agricultural straw as reinforcement also allows us to create an urn that is lightweight and durable during use while remaining biodegradable after burial.
2. Why is the material environmentally preferable?
UrnBT urns were developed around a simple principle: an urn intended to return to the earth should be designed with that final destination in mind.
The biomaterial used for the urn is biodegradable and reinforced with annually renewable agricultural straw. The urn is designed to break down naturally under suitable burial conditions rather than leave persistent conventional plastic behind.
The lightweight construction also means that each urn weighs only a little over 700 grams, reducing the amount of material required for each product.
For us, environmental responsibility is therefore not an additional feature applied to the urn. It is one of the starting points of the product's material, construction and purpose.
3. What evidence supports your environmental claims?
Our environmental claims are based on the properties, testing and certifications of the biomaterial used to manufacture UrnBT urns rather than simply on our own description of the product.
The material has documented biodegradability and compostability characteristics and is supported by recognised testing and certification.
- EN 13432 / OK COMPOST (TÜV Austria)
- BPI Certified Compostable (North America)
- ABA Compostable (Australia)
- Biobased Content Certifications: DIN CERTCO (EU), JBPA (Japan), USDA (USA)
The material is reinforced with natural agricultural straw, an annually renewable raw material.

We are happy to provide funeral professionals with the relevant material documentation and certificates upon request.
4. Why would families choose UrnBT urns?
Choosing an urn is a deeply personal decision. For some families, the material and meaning behind the urn are just as important as its appearance.
UrnBT can be particularly meaningful for families who value nature, sustainability and simplicity. The idea that the urn gradually returns to nature after burial can feel especially appropriate for a person who had a close relationship with forests, nature or the outdoors.
At the same time, an ecological urn does not have to look purely functional. Our collection includes natural, painted, ribbon-decorated and engraved alternatives, allowing families to choose between understated simplicity and a more individual memorial.
Ultimately, UrnBT offers funeral homes another kind of choice to present to families: an urn designed not only around how it looks during the funeral, but also around what happens to it afterwards.
5. What price segment are UrnBT urns intended for?
UrnBT is positioned as an accessible premium product.
The collection combines Finnish manufacturing, biodegradable materials and Nordic design while allowing funeral homes to determine their own final retail pricing.
Different finishes also make it possible to create a natural price ladder within the collection. Our Natural models provide a simple entry point, while Painted, Ribbon and Engraved models offer progressively more distinctive and personalised alternatives.
Funeral homes remain completely free to determine their own retail prices and margins.
6. How can UrnBT complement rather than replace my current assortment?
You do not need to replace your existing urn collection to introduce UrnBT.
In fact, for many funeral homes we recommend the opposite.
Start with a small selection and offer UrnBT as a distinct alternative for families looking for a biodegradable, nature-oriented or Finnish-designed urn.
There is no minimum order quantity, and different models can be mixed freely. This means you can test demand with only a few urns without making a major inventory investment or changing your existing supplier relationships.
If your customers respond positively, you can expand the collection gradually.
7. Which UrnBT models to choose?
Our collection includes Natural, Painted, Ribbon and Engraved urns, giving funeral homes alternatives ranging from very simple and natural to more decorative and personalised designs.
If you are unsure which products are most appropriate for your market, contact us and we can recommend a selection based on the experience of our existing funeral home partners.
8. What should I order first?
For a first order, we recommend choosing a small and varied selection rather than several identical urns.
This allows you to see the different finishes in person and gives families several alternatives to compare.
A good first selection should ideally include:
- one Natural urn to demonstrate the material in its purest form
- one or two Painted urns with broadly appealing colours
- one Ribbon urn for a more decorative alternative
- one Engraved urn to demonstrate the possibilities for personalisation
Because there is no minimum order quantity, you can start small and expand the assortment based on what your customers prefer.
9. Which 4–6 models would you recommend for a small funeral home?
For a small funeral home introducing UrnBT for the first time, we would recommend a balanced starter collection rather than simply choosing the six designs with the highest sales volume.
Our suggested structure would be:
1 × Natural
The best way to demonstrate the distinctive wheat-straw biomaterial and the ecological idea behind UrnBT.
2 × Painted
Choose two versatile colours that give families clearly different alternatives while demonstrating the quality of the painted finish.
1 × Ribbon
Adds a more decorative and ceremonial alternative to the display.
1 × Engraved
Demonstrates how the urn can become more individual and personal.
Optional 6th urn: another Painted or Natural model
Choose this based on the preferences and typical clientele of your funeral home.
This gives you a representative UrnBT collection without requiring a large initial investment.
And because orders of six urns or more qualify for free delivery, six urns make a particularly practical starting point for a first UrnBT collection.
